Navigating eDiscovery with Ed Lawrence’s Insights

Season 2 Finale: Ed Lawrence on his route into eDiscovery, AI at Epiq, mentoring and standardised workflows.

In the Season 2 finale of Down in the Bunker, James Merritt sits down with Ed Lawrence, a seasoned project manager at Epiq, who shares his unique journey into the world of eDiscovery.

📚 From Literature to eDiscovery
Ed’s background in English language might seem distant from the realm of eDiscovery, but he explains how starting out on hard copy and scanning led him to loading data into Relativity and, eventually, project management. “I could see how one almost fed into the other,” Ed reflects, illustrating the connections between traditional document handling and modern eDiscovery processes.

🏢 The Evolution of Epiq
After over ten years at Epiq, Ed discusses the company’s shift towards innovative solutions, particularly with their proprietary AI tools. This investment has not only streamlined workflows but has also expanded the scope of services provided. “It really has been impressive, especially over the last eighteen months to two years,” he notes, emphasising the efficiency gains in their operations.

🤖 The Impact of GenAI
Ed says GenAI has sped up both his own work and his client work. His team has recently been testing search strings with it, and he describes how much quicker it gets you to the right type of answer than the older tools. He also explains why, in his experience, there has been less resistance to AI tools than there was to predictive coding, with people now used to AI in their personal lives.

🤝 Mentorship and Learning
Reflecting on his career, Ed shares the importance of mentorship, both as a mentee and now as a mentor. He believes in the value of reaching out to subject matter experts, learning from their experiences, and then passing that knowledge on to junior team members. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have two or three really, really good mentors to me in my time at Epiq,” he says, underlining the collaborative spirit within the industry.

🧭 Looking Ahead
Asked what he would like to see changed in how projects are delivered, Ed makes the case for more standardised workflows. Workflows that become too custom, he says, are less defensible and hard to look back on six or twelve months later. “I still would like to see that grounded in some kind of common approach,” he says, while accepting that teams need to adapt to different matters. He also describes Epiq’s habit of having at least two people on every project, so there is always a backup.

🏏 Off the Clock
Away from work, Ed describes himself as “a sports tragic”. He talks football, fantasy leagues and Manchester United, and repairing cricket bats, including one for a Lancashire player.
